Nathalie Moyano Gonzalez is a flamenco aficionado by heritage. She is co-founder and director of Peña Flamenca El Indalo, which promotes flamenco in Ireland. The group runs the Dublin Flamenco School, and also organises the Dublin Flamenco Festival. The second edition of the festival will take place in October 2012. Nathalie will be joined by a Flamenco guitarist José de la María. José is originally from Málaga, moved to Dublin in 2011 and joined Peña Flamenca El Indalo.

Leslie Dowdall is one of Ireland’s leading female vocalists and singer songwriters. She first came to prominence with In Tua Nua, who fused celtic tradition with rock. With Leslie as lead vocalist, In Tua Nua recorded four albums and, over a seven-year period, played and toured with bands including U2, Simple Minds, Bob Dylan, and The Pretenders.

Leslie teaches performance and singing skills in her Education workshop project Songcraft. She will be joined on the night by a group of singer, Elle.

Eamon Sweeney was awarded the first musicology PhD to be accredited by DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama. He has performed on stage, radio and TV both as a solo artist and with various ensembles including the National Symphony Orchestra and National Concert Orchestra. Eamon is also one half of the group Tonos that specializes in a blend of Irish and European music from the 16^th to 18th centuries – mixing musical

flavours from the wider Traditional Irish, Celtic and Spanish Traditions. The Spanish word ‘tonos’ translates as ‘tone.’

Jane Clarke is a widely published poet who lives near Glenmalure in Co. Wicklow. She has won a number of prizes including Listowel Writers Week (2007) and the iYeats (2010). She writes contemplative, lyrical poems with evocative rural imagery and a strong sense of musicality and rhythm.

In keeping with our Spanish theme, Enrique Alda, a graduate in Translation and Interpreting from the University of Salamanca (Spain), will translate Jane’s poems into the wonderful Spanish language.

Eilis Stanley

Eilis Stanley has been a published poet and prose writer for many years. She lived in London, New York and San Francisco, before returning to Ireland in 2000. While in California, she wrote a weekly column for the local Irish newspaper.

Eilis was first published in 1987 for her contribution to “ Radical Reforms”. She has also written for a new Women's Ezine called Scarlet. A member of the Airfield Writers Group in Dublin, she won first prize at Listowel Writers Week (Short Poem Originals) 2010.

Quarantine Hill

Quarantine Hill has been evolving over several years. Starting out as Radiowaves in 2003, the band produced their debut album "Keep My Silence". The album received a good reaction, which exceeded their expectations. But changes within the group gave the band a fresh new look and sound, and it needed a fresh new name. So Quarantine Hill was born.

Their latest album, Quicksand was launched in Wicklow Town in 2011. More recently, the band recorded a track for the album 'Bands for Boats', a fundraiser for the RNLA Wicklow.

Paul Sillery

Paul Sillery lives in Wicklow Town and is 'mad for the music.' He mainly plays saxophone and guitar. Currently studying music at DIT, he plays Baritone sax with DIT's Big Band. His love of jazz and Frank Sinatra is ledgend.

On the night, Paul will be joined by a few friends. Anything could happen!

Erin Fornoff

Erin Fornoff hails from the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina and currently lives in a cabin in the wilds of Wicklow. After writing a single poem in college she decided she liked performing more than printing and moved into spoken word.

Called a "story-telling poet," she has performed her poetry on Electric Picnic's Word and Arts Council Stages, at Kilmainham Arts Festival, Caca Milis Cabaret in Wexford, Flatlakes Festival in Monaghan, as well as Brownbread Mixtape, The Glór Sessions at the International, Speakeasy Cabaret, and various locations in the US.

Josh Johnson

We welcome back Josh Johnson to the Space Inside. Josh studied Popular Music in the University of Salford, graduating as a pianist, band leader and composer. He is well-known as a versatile musician. Josh performed on stage and recorded with Kila, Declan O’Rourke, Stewart Agnew, Irish tenor Karl Scully and others. He is the resident organist at the Unitarian Church in Dublin. His latest CD, Asylum Harbour, is available now. He will be joined by SJ McArdle and Keith Mullins on the night.

We' re back with a bang supporting the Feeling Good Week run by Wicklow Mental Health.

Al O'Donnell

Al O'Donnell developed his interest in folk music while attending Art College in Nottingham, listening to Ewan McColl and Peggy and Pete Seeger.

The Irish folk scene was just developing at that time (1960's), and over the last 40 years he has become "one of the great voices in our singing tradition". He also was one of the members of Sweeney's Men. If you missed him at Americana and Roots festival, now’s your chance to see him at the Space Inside.

Phil Lynch

Phil Lynch has been writing poetry “off and on” for many years. His poems have appeared in a number of publications and magazines, some were also featured on RTE radio.
Phil is a member of the Dalkey Writers’ Workshop. He has performed on the Word Stage in the Mindfield at this year’s Electric Picnic Festival. Earlier this year, he recorded a piece for Dublin Poetry Week on Balcony TV and was featured in the ‘Scrapbook’ series on Liffey Sound FM.

Keith Moss

IMRO Unplugged Winner Keith Moss will appear for the first time at The Space Inside showcasing songs from his critically-acclaimed sixth studio album What Eludes You Moves You.

He has been described by The Irish Times as ‘a curious mixture of Bernard Butler and Loudon Wainwright III..An instinctive performer...Someone to keep a judicious eye out for.’ His music is so unique that ‘influences prove difficult to pin - a touch of acoustic REM, Smashing Pumpkins, Billy McKenzie…Fantastically odd’ Blank.

Not to be daunted by yet another cut in our funding, the Space Inside team have been busy organising a raffle to raise funds to keep our journal and Live cessions FREE! But we need help to sell the tickets.

We will be sending out envelopes to our regulars, enclosing three books of raffle tickets - €2 a ticket or €5 a book - and we would be grateful if you could sell them for us. Stubs and unsold tickets with money should be returned before 1st October 2011. No questions asked!

After an excellent Open Mic night, we are taking our usual summer break. During that time, we will be running a grand raffle to raise funds for our next season and our quarterly arts magazine.

Open Mic 'Up On the Roof' Tuesday 7 June 2011

Update 7/6/11: Due to bad weather forecast the Open Mic will be held inside around a BIG fire! Same starting time of 7pm.

The last session, before we close for the summer, will be held 'Up On the Roof' of the Wicklow Sailing Club - weather permitting.

It's Open Mic night so come along and strut your stuff - be it poetry, music or dance, or whatever floats your boat.

Some special guests will be there on the night.

IMPORTANT: Doors open early at 7pm so as to avoid frost bite later on in the evening.
Bring warm clothes, even if the sun is shining. If it is raining, we will be downstairs in front of the fire!

Look forward to seeing you for the last night of the season - it's sure to be buzzing.

Liz O Riordan & Pat Connery

We welcome for the first time to the Space Inside, a musical duo who brings us newly-composed, traditional Irish and classical music and song.

Pat Connery is a singer and plays uilleann pipes, concertina and guitar. Liz O’Riordan is a composer, singer and pianist who is inspired by language and poetry. She arranges beautiful harmony for well-known Irish songs, and has composed musical settings of her own and other people’s poetry. She also plays fiddle and bodhran. www.patconnerylizoriordan.com

Conor O’Donnell

Hailing from Wicklow Town, Conor comes from a musical family. He’s toured the states several times with various acts and plays a lot of shows now with his current band, The Big Muddy.
He also is the visionary founder of one of Ireland’s hottest music festivals, the Americana Roots Weekend in Greystones, on the June bank holiday.

Conor will give us his lively version of songs by Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash.

Tim Kavanagh sings Tim Buckley

Tim Kavanagh is a singer from Wicklow Town who spends most of his time busking on the main street, now that the good weather is back.

Tim will sing a selection of songs by the great Tim Buckley, who was a prolific singer songwriter throughout the 1960s, releasing nine studio albums and touring America and Europe. With an eight octave range to his magnificent Irish tenor voice, Buckley is loved around the world for his legacy, which crossed all musical genres from simple folk music of the sixties through to experimental free form jazz and white funk music.

‘My voice has nowhere near the power Buckley had, but I hope that in singing some of his songs it will give people an interest to buy his recordings and listen to a very rare and beautiful singer,’ says Tim.

Zoryanna

The Zoryanna

The Zoryanna are a Dublin-based Tribal and Modern bellydance troupe.

With members from all four corners of the world, The Zoryanna has developed their only style of Improvised Tribal Bellydance. They also mix-and-match many other styles into their dance.

Frank Gallagher

Frank Gallagher

Frank Gallagher is a singer and a regular acoustic and a slide guitarist. He has been playing blues and jazz in Ireland and in Europe since the 1970s. Over the years, he has performed regularly with the likes of Don Baker, Red Peters and Johnny Norris, to mention just a few. In the 1980s, he formed the Jitterbug Jug Band with Gerry Clarke. Since that time he has mainly performed solo or in small groups with Gerry Clarke.

Frank has also lectured and written about blues and jazz, both in Ireland and abroad. He is co-founder and the chairman for many years of The Courthouse Arts Centre in Tinahely.

Colm Nolan runs workshops with diverse groups, from Yoga classes to special needs, schools and businesses. He explores the voice and connects with the deeper, authentic self.

His unusual sessions find audiences joining in with vocal exercises, releasing inhibitions, and tuning the voice by singing Indian and Sanskrit words. He also offers his unique performances at intimate gatherings and festivals around the country.

Siobhan Doyle

Siobhán Doyle sings Percy French

Soprano, Siobhán Doyle, is a familiar face at the National Concert Hall. She has won numerous awards for her singing, including the Gold Medal for Soprano Solo, The Operatic Cup, Thomas Moore Cup, The Fitzgerald Trophy for Operatic Singing (three successive years) and the title Singer of the Year. She studied under Sr Mary Agnes Cecilia, St Mary’s College, Arklow, and later with Dr Veronica Dunne at the College of Music.

An accomplished singer and actress, she has appeared in over 40 musicals and operettas, among them Anna in The Merry Widow, Margot in The Desert Song, Saffi in The Gipsy Baron, Rosalinda in Der Fledermaus, Nancy in Oliver, and Julie in Showboat. She has played principal boy in pantomime at the Olympia Theatre and The Gaiety Theatre.

Siobhán has performed in The Percy French Story throughout the country and tonight will celebrate Percy French’s life and work through his songs.

William Percy French is one of Ireland’s best loved songwriters and his list of famous songs includes ‘The Mountains of Mourne’ and ‘Phil the Fluter’s Ball’.

Rory O’Sullivan lives in Wicklow Town. He is a young, up-and-coming poet whose influences are two of the greats: Yeats and Kavanagh. ‘There is a stillness in music and words that captures me. Music and words come hand in hand, let them help you, let them heal you, for that is their purpose, and that's why I write,’ says Rory.

Winner of the Xmas Factor ’09 Writing competition held in Wicklow Library, Rory is also a keen songwriter and musician and plays in the band, ‘Rebel Diamond’.

Colm Lynch

Colm Lynch is a South Dublin singer-songwriter who has been tirelessly gigging, both at home and abroad, over the last few years. He’s a powerhouse live performer, capable of summoning up the kind of fiery passion reminiscent of Springsteen, Van Morrison or The Waterboys.

He is also a great songwriter, as his album A Whisper In A Riot testifies.

Mealla Tarrant

Check out Mealla on YouTube to get a flavor of this great singer. She was the opening act for popular Cork band, Fred, and since then has been playing at a variety of venues.

Mealla writes her own material and sings cover songs accompanied by acoustic guitar. If you missed her last performance at the Space Inside, make sure you don’t miss this one. Word is she is rapidly going on to bigger things!

Catch the Moon

Postponed due to snow, our four writers are now ready and waiting to present their poetry performance. The reading flows between their unique voices, addressing the vibrant themes of love + sex; men and women; nature and home; body + soul.

Each poet introduces one of the themes, which is followed by 2 poems by each performer.

We look forward to Kathy D’Arcy, Jane Clarke, Tina Pisco and Shirley McClure’s unique performance.

Oltremara

Oltremara's vision is to introduce the Mediterranean's musical and folk heritage to a new audience and to create a cultural fusion of the traditional music, song and dance of Southern Italy and Ireland.

The 5 band members met in Ireland by chance and all of them come from different musical and dance backgrounds. Inspired by traditional dance and ancient folk tales, all of the band's songs reflect their cultural heritage while experimenting with new sounds to bring a fresh and exciting experience to their audience.

Robyn Kavanagh is 23 years old and lives in Wicklow Town. She is probably best known for her appearance on the popular RTE talent show, You’re a Star, when she was runner up. That was three years ago and since then she has been taking a break from the music. That was until recently, when she acquired a manager.

Robyn is currently working on her own music and learning to play guitar. ‘I have been writing my own songs for the last 3 years,’ she says, ‘and my aim is to get signed to a label and hopefully make the charts.’

Robyn’s sound is new age soul with mild rock influences and a hint of rhythm and blues. Her backing band for the night is the three Meakin brothers - Sounds interesting and not to be missed!

Avoca. Sean Olohan and Simon Keogh are welcome back to the Space Inside. The guys have been performing together for longer than they care to remember. Much of their time is spent giging all over Europe, and Switzerland is like a second home to them.

In March they launched their newest song “ The man who reached the sky” a song about Charles Barrington from Bray who was the first person to climb the Eiger. During St. Patricks weekend, the band also launched another song in France called “ A french connection” which will be used as the anthem for the twinning of Wicklow and Montigny. Always a toe-tapping evening when Avoca take the stage at the Space Inside.

Joe O' Connor. Joe has been steadily making his way through the Irish music scene over the past few years sharing the bill with such acts as Sinead O' Connor, Chip Taylor and Paddy Casey to name but a few. Whether playing with his Blues/Rock outfit Kill Man Ten, on his own, or with his brand new outfit Joe O' Connor & The Mercenaries, his shows are always full of smokey Southern vocals and bluesy soulful guitar playing. His new independent release will feature such live favorites as 'Blonde Haired Blues' and 'Sober St.' Joe O' Connor & The Mercenaries' new E.P. Étoile de la Mer

Étoile de la Mer is the stage name of Maria Scanlon, an experienced dancer who also teaches Shape up With Belly dance in the FYI Dance Club in Wicklow Town.
The Bellydance is uniquely designed for the female body and is a dance characterized by sinuous hip, abdominal and arm movements.

Étoile de la Mer will hypnotise us with her mystical performances of Oriental Fusion bellydance. She will be joined on the night by Estrella del Mar, another captivating bellydance performer.

Bellydance classes are held in the FYI Dance Club is held on the South Quay every Thursday morning at 10am.

Josh Johnston
We welcome back Josh Johnston to the Space Inside. Josh studied Popular Music in the University of Salford, graduating as a pianist, band leader and composer. He is well-known as a versatile musician.

Josh was pianist in the band of Birr singer/ songwriter Roesy for six years, performed on stage and recorded with Kila, Declan O’Rourke, Stewart Agnew, SJ McArdle, NoelieMcDonnell, Irish tenor Karl Scully and others. He is the resident organist at the Unitarian Church in Dublin.

He released his first solo CD, Three Friends in 2000, and a duo disc with jazz (and classical) violinist David MacKenzie. His latest CD, Asylum Harbour, is out now.

Ronan Swift

Ronan was born in 1972 in Dublin, Ireland, the year Al Blue Lewis fought Ali in a bout of Gaelic Boxing at Croker and came second. He has been a schoolboy, a schoolmaster, a window cleaner & a gardener.
His tunes are adorned by a dedicated gang of selfless musicians - Eoin O’Brien (electric guitar - Kíla, Clay Dolls), Josh Johnston (piano & keyboards - Roesy, SJ McArdle), Bill Blackmore (trumpet - Trihornophone) and Malachy Robinson (double bass - Irish Chamber Orchestra) are the core band. The same group of musicians have come together to help Ronan produce both his debut CD Farewell Future Wives (2009) and his 2nd CD A Whinbush Backwards (due for release April 2011).

His rare live performances with the same band usually take place in Dublin, Ireland. There's one lined up for December 2010 - date to be announced.

Space Inside journal goes quarterly

After six years, the Space Inside journal has moved from a monthly to a quarterly publication. The steady reduction in funding over the years has meant that, in order to keep the journal alive, we must cut our cloth. We plan to make it a bigger publication but with the same high quality of articles and information. You will still be able to read it online,
Our monthly Live Nights performers will continue to be published on our blog and on Facebook.

Commenting on the high standard of the entries and imaginative use of the phrase 'space inside', Martin began by recounting various lines from poems which he felt were particularly worthly of mention.

Jay Ramsay is the author of over 30 books of poetry, translation and non-fiction. He pioneered the connection between poetry and personal development and has taken his work abroad to America and Europe. His most recent book The Poet in You (O Books) was published in 2009.

Conor O’Donnell

In 2000, Conor O' Donnell teamed up with Tom Galvin to form an Irish and American folk band, playing in pubs around County Wicklow. As The Big Muddy, they toured the US and could often be found gigging in Portland Oregon. Conor’s mission was to bring great American style music to Ireland and, last June, the Americana and Roots weekend was launched in Greystones, to great acclaim. Tonight, Conor plays solo giving us a taste of his folk roots with lively version of songs by Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen.

Celebrating 10 years, WSMD presents Summer School of Rock 2010, featuring some of the bands from this year’s camp ready to rock you with old and contemporary tunes. This is another chance to see the bands following their performance on Culture Night.

The Space Inside team is taking a break for the summer.

We will be back in October with more performers and our great magazine - if we can raise the funds!

In the meantime, here are details of our fund-raising poetry competition:

The Space Inside are running their first poetry competition, which is open to all ages.

All you have to do is write a poem inspired by the words ‘the space inside’.

The poem can be about anything from the space inside your head, to the space inside a box.

Let your imagination go wild!

The winner will receive a hamper crammed with lots of chocolate, wine and other goodies. The runner-up will receive a smaller hamper crammed with just as delicious goodies. Both poems will be published in the Space Inside journal and on our blog.

Keep those creative juices working during the summer months and help us raise funds for our next Space Inside season.

Open Mic Session

You are invited to The Space Inside’s first ever Open Mic Live Night ‘On the Roof’. Weather permitting, the last night of our season will be held on the roof of the Wicklow Sailing Club.

Musicians, poets and singers are welcome to strut their stuff under the stars. Maybe you have already performed at a Live Night or are just gathering up your courage to perform that special song or poem . Either way, you can take one minute or ten of centre stage - the choice is yours.

Always an appreciative audience at the Space Inside, you will not find a friendlier space to perform.

Special Guest: Josh Johnston

Josh Johnson studied Popular Music in the University of Salford, graduating as a pianist, band leader and composer. He is well-known as a versatile musician.

Josh was pianist in the band of Birr singer/ songwriter Roesy for six years, performed on stage and recorded with Kila, Declan O’Rourke, Stewart Agnew, SJ McArdle, NoelieMcDonnell, Irish tenor Karl Scully and others. He is the resident organist at the Unitarian Church in Dublin.

He released his first solo CD, Three Friends in 2000, and a duo disc with jazz (and classical) violinist David MacKenzie.

Eamon Sweeney

Dr Eamon Sweeney is an early music specialist with performances at the International Guitar Festival of Ireland, Bath International Guitar Festival, and Dundee International Guitar Festival. He is acting director of the Bray VEC Music Centre and is on staff of the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama.

He is also one half of the duo Irish early Music group, Tonos, the other half being Róisín O’ Grady (Soprano). Tonight, he will play Spanish, French and Irish music from the 17th and 18th centuries on his Baroque guitar.

Una Pedreschi
Una Pedreschi is from Wicklow. She started singing when she was fifteen years old, ‘I got introduced to Tori Amos by my music teacher in school and I sang ‘Winter’ for my music practical exams and got an A!’

Una is a member of the successful singing group Celtic Woman and she can also be found on the odd weekend singing in Casa Pepe’s restaurant in Wicklow or Gorey. Her future ambition is to be a successful solo singer and to travel the world.

Una’s influences are ‘Billy Joel, Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Musical Theatre, Billy Joel, Alice in Chains, Jewel, my family, my friends, my music teacher Ms Mary Gaffney, my dog Pedro…oh…and Billy Joel!’

She has recorded a number of songs including ‘Umbrella’, which can be found on her MySpace page.

AVOCA

Sean Olohan from Wicklow and Simon Keogh from Dublin have performed together all over Europe, for as long as they care to remember .

This coming Friday May 7th. this entertaining duo will officially open a new Irish Pub near Zurich, Switzerland, called McArthur’s Celtic Pub, and from there will perform in the city of Geneva .

Switzerland is like a second home to these lads. In March, they launched their latest song ‘The man who reached the sky’ - a song about Charles Barrington from Bray who was the first person to climb the Eiger. The band also launched another new song in France called ‘A french connection’ which will be used as the anthem for the twinning of Wicklow and Montigny.

As usual, Simon and Sean look forward to their visit to Wicklow Sailing Club and hope there won’t be too much ‘space inside’ !!

Sinead O’Brien
Sinead is a singer, poet and percussionist. She also plays Kamal Ngoni (African harp) which influenced her style of self-taught guitar playing. She studied West African percussion in Ghana, Senegal and the Gambia and plays Sabar, Kpanlogo and Djimbe drums. She also enjoys Udu (Clay drum made by a local potter in Dublin), Congas, Bodhrán and Calabash water drum. . . . and her own hand-made Skwonkaphone. Sinead performs regularly with 'Chloe Goodchild' for her Irish concerts and sang and played percussion with 'Yemanja' (World Music Acapella) for 5 years, which included touring Ireland and TV appearances. Beating Time
Beating Time originated as a quartet in 1996, inspired by listening to a ladies barbershop quartet at the Cork Choral Festival. Making their first TV debut on RTE's Open House in 1997, membership quickly grew from the original 8 members to 23. Close harmony - accapella singing - is the essence of barbershop singing. The group’s repertoire covers musical styles ranging from swing and old ballads to gospel and today’s music charts. They are available for Corporate Functions, Weddings, Birthday Parties, or any special occasion. As Members of the Irish Association of Barbershop Singers, Beating Time compete each year at the National Convention and over the years, have taken the Gold Medal six times for Best Female National Chorus. Quarantine Hill
Quarantine Hill is a band with a new look and sound. Starting out as ‘Radiowaves’ in March 2003, the band produced their debut album "Keep My Silence". The Album received a good reaction and exceeded expectations locally. With new musicians joining the band, a fresh new name was required and so ‘Quarantine Hill’ was born - Quarantiine Hill is the name of a street in Wicklow Town.

Aphrodite Lion and the Clam-Jams!
Aphrodite Lion aka Anne Graham is a singer/songwriter who is currently working on songs for an album which she hopes to complete by the end of the year. The majority of the songs she will perform tonight “are like the lament of a jaded prom queen who has to sort out her teenage issues in order to move onto adulthood.” Her influences are varied and include the likes of The Beatles, David Bowie, Sleater-Kinney, Fever Ray, St. Vincent, Vivaldi and Lady Gaga. Anne will be joined on the night by Michael Tinsley with whom she has recently been writing songs. Neil Tierney & Martin Swords
Neill Tierney and Martin Swords present an eclectic mix of music and music related poems.
Neill Tierney is a skilled guitarist whose style and rhythm has to be seen and heard to be believed. He has performed before in Space Inside to great acclaim.
Martin Swords, a well known member of Wicklow Writers, accompanies Neill with a selection of his own music inspired poems.

Kwela Kwela
Kwela Kwela was originally formed in 1995, recording and touring in Ireland in that year. Members then were Punka Khoza, TJM Tutty and Stuart Smyth, and the band played a mix of African and Irish traditional music - before such mixes became popular with musicians here. Sadly Punka has since passed away and Stuart has moved on to other things in life.
Kwela Kwela members are now TJM Tutty, bass guitar, from the original line up, who is joined by Angolan native and master percussionist-drummer Mario Ngoma, a long-time resident of Wicklow. George Tshilumba from the Congo is on guitar and vocals, and Sean Sourke from Naas, on guitar, complete the line up.
The band plays its own music and anything is possible on the night.

Mealla Tarrant is in her third year of primary school teacher training in Froebel College, Blackrock. Opening a youtube account and posting music videos gave her enough confidence to begin playing and singing in small venues. In December, she was the opening act for popular Cork band, Fred, and since then has began searching for more venues in which to be heard. Mealla sings cover songs accompanied by acoustic guitar. Artists she covers include Oasis, Paolo Nutini and Dire Straits.

Rory O’Sullivan is a young poet whose influences are two of the greats: Yeats and Kavanagh. ‘I like talking, but some say I talk too much. I like dancing, but I'm told I'm a terrible dancer. I like smiling at people, who like smiling back. There is a stillness in music and words that captures me. Music and words come hand in hand, let them help you, let them heal you, for that is their purpose, and that's why I write.’

Winner of the Xmas Factor ’09 Writing competition held in Wicklow Library, Rory is also a keen songwriter and musician and plays in the band, ‘Rebel Diamond’. Rory’s poetry performance will be accompanied by music.

The day the colour fell

I lay and watched as it came down

Sweeping its beauty all across the town

Like paint splashing on a page

It dropped like glitter away from its cage.

No more emotion no wrong or right

We were left just floating our colour left behind

Wicklow Piper

This piper is a member of St. Patrick’s Pipe Band. Founded in 1946, the band has been entertaining people not only in Wicklow but as far away as France and England. The task of passing on the tradition of piping is in the hands of the current Pipe Major, Joe Hanlon; in charge of drumming is the Drum Sargeant, Micheal O'Neill. New members are always welcome. Practice takes place in St. Patrick’s Boys School Prefab on Mondays, (drums only), Tuesday (Full Band) and Friday nights (Pipes only) from 7.30pm - 9.00pm.

Mia Parsons’ Trio

Mia Parsons is a singer whose voice has been described as being like 'chocolate'. A singer/songwriter, her deeply moving music spans jazz/funk and blues. A regular performer at festivals and other musical events, she has worked with many of the great Irish jazz musicians, including Richie, Hugh and Michael Buckley, Greg Felton, Myles, Paul and Anto Drennan, to mention a few.
Mia is joined by the experienced guitarist, Robbie Overson, who is a member of the legendary Irish band ‘Scullion’, with Sonny Condell and Philip King.
Mick O’Neill is the third member of this unique musical venture. A talented musician and songwriter, he brings his keyboard skills to this eclectic band.
The Mia Parsons’ Trio is a fusion of jazz, folk, and Motown.

The Two Old Codgers

Frank O’Keeffe and Justin Aylmer are professional actors with a vast number of years experience between them. As the old codgers, their humorous and insightful commentary on life is always entertaining.
Frank is also a playwright and his play ‘The Young Lady Says Yes’ , recently won Category B at the Cork Writers’ Week. Congrats to Frank and all the cast.

Wayne Dunne

Wayne has been playing music since he was a boy, fronting several bands as singer/ guitarist. A talented guitar player with singing voice, he has most recently fronted Feedback, one of Wicklow's most popular bands. Tonight he performs solo, singing songs from Pink Floyd and a host of other greats.

Paul Sharkey

Paul Sharkey trained at the Brendan Smith Theatre Academy (1975 - 1977) then worked with a number of Dublin based drama groups, including the Dublin Shakespeare Society, playing the title role of Hamlet in 1980.

Moving to Wicklow, Paul continued to study speech and drama and, in 1981, he co-founded Harlequin Players with his wife Liz.

For ten years Harlequin Players provided corporate entertainment (Ghost Night & Murder Mystery) for Tinakilly House Hotel and also Dinner Theatre, including shows based on the works of Oscar Wilde, Charles Dickens, W.B. Yeats and James Joyce. During the same period Paul compiled and performed shows for the Synge Summer School.

This festive month, Paul will entertain us with ‘Bob Sawyer gives a bachelor party’ from Pickwick Papers. An occasion not to be missed!

Jazz duo: Frank Gallagher and Gerry Clarke

Frank Gallagher has been playing blues and jazz in Ireland and Europe since the 70s. He has performed regularly with the likes of Don Baker, Red Peters and Johnny Norris, to mention just a few. In the 80s, he formed the Jitterbug Jug Band with Gerry Clarke. Since

then he has mainly performed solo or in small groups with Gerry Clarke. He has also lectured and written about blues and jazz and worked as a music critic for the Grapevine Arts Magazine.

Gerry Clarke has been performing blues and early jazz since the 70s in Ireland and America, where he worked with some of the important figures of the folk blues revival. He is also a music broadcaster, historian and record producer with an international reputation. His radio documentary, The Golden Age of Irish Recording, won the BCI award for best music documentary in Ireland. The third volume of his Old Time Records label, Piping Rarities, will be launched in the Pipers’ Club on 5 December 2009.

A.K.
A.K. is a singer/songwriter from Waterford. His foray into writing songs started when he was 15 finding himself unable to sing in the key of the popular singers he liked at the time. Since then he has been building up a range of songs, developing his style. Vocally he has been compared to Jack L, Nick Cave and James Hetfield. With a wide range in musical tastes.

Seamus Byrne - The Manach
Seamus Byrne is a Celtic singer, flautist and international performer. He performs music for meditation and relaxation and his haunting Celtic Music reaches in to move your spirit. Seamus has released a number of CDs, his latest with John Two-Hawks, the master American Indian musician.
Seamus plays Irish flute, whistles, Apache Spirit flute and bodhran, and loves to sing in the melodic Irish style. We welcome him back to our Live Night.

Timothy Kavanagh

Timothy Kavanagh is a twenty five year old artist and musician from Wicklow Town. ‘I started playing the drums when I was 10 years old, and picked up percussion instruments, like the bongos and bodhran, during my teenage years,’ he says. He taught himself to play the guitar and has been writing songs ever since.
On the night, Timothy will play some of his own numbers and songs he enjoys singing.

Siobhan Mac Mahon is an Irish Poet, Performer and Playwright resident in Leeds. Siobhan invokes the magic, myths and mayhem of the ancient Irish Goddesses and their modern day counterparts in a funny, passionate and provocative piece of performance - part poetry, part story telling.

Siobhan’s work explores our mystical, cultural and spiritual connection to the earth, the banishment of the Divine feminine and the resultant repression of a joyful sensuality. Al O’Donnell’s career in folk music has had many highlights. He accompanied Luke Kelly on RTE TV on Raglan Road and his two solo album’s spawned two top-ten hits. He appeared on ‘The Late Late Show’ and at various festival, sharing the stage with Emmylou Harris and Rory Gallagher. He toured with Tommy Maken, The Chieftons, The Dubliners and many others.

Al’s latest CD, ‘Ramble Away,’ was released in late ’08. We are delighted to welcome this professional musician back to the Space Inside.

Elis Taves

Elis Taves is a well-known Brazilian photographer with a special interest in Ireland. During 2003, she came to Ireland to further develop her photography skills. While here, her exhibition ‘Celebrating Easter in Brazil’ was held in the Chapel of Trinity College sponsored by the Brazilian Embassy and The Chaplaincy of Trinity College.
On returning to Brazil, her exhibition “Ireland” was held in the Irish Embassy, Brasilia. In 2005, she came back to launch her book, City of Children, at Oscar Wilde House, The American College.
Elis is now back in Ireland, living in Bray, working on her new project focused on Irish women,“Behind the Eyes”.
We are looking forward to seeing her wonderful photographs of Brazil.

Chaos and Harmony

Chaos and Harmony, formerly Song Circle, is a natural voice workshop which meets weekly in Greystones for the sheer joy of singing together. Led by Eileen and Anna, the group will perform a selection of inspiring music and, as a special treat, they will be joined on the night by Eleanor Dawson, an exceptional flautist. Sean Olohan and Simon Keogh have been very busy. They had a top 10 hit in the Irish and download charts with their song ‘Saving Lives’ in aid of the RNLI. Since their last visit, they have toured Switzerland twice, releasing 2 songs there. Sean’s recent compositions include songs about local heroes: Charles Barrington, a Bray man who was the first to climb the Eiger mountain in Switzerland, and Wicklow Town’s Robert Halpin, whose claim to fame was the laying of undersea cables. Both these songs are in their final editing. Later this month, the 2 lads will perform at an International Festival in France which will coincide with the release of another new song ‘A French Connection’, to celebrate Wicklow Town’s twinning with Montigney. Always a pleasure to hear them perform.

Al O’Donnell

Al O’Donnell’s love of folk music began during the revival of story telling songs during the 60s, while he was an art college student in Nottingham. He started playing gigs in local nearby folk clubs and became a singing regular at the Nottingham Folk Workshop. His career in folk music has had many highlights. He accompanied Luke Kelly on one of his finest performances of Raglan Road on RTE TV. His two solo studio album’s spawned two top ten hits, ‘Spanish Lady’ and ‘Sammy’s Bar’. He appeared on ‘The Late Late Show’ and at Lisdoonvarna festivals, sharing the stage with Emmylou Harris and Rory Gallagher. He toured with Tommy Maken, The Chieftons, The Dubiners and many others.

His latest CD, ‘Ramble Away’, was released in November ’08. Check out his website at

Indiivara

Indiivara are a tribal dance group. They dance American Tribal Style Ballydance Dance, which takes its influences, both in its dance moves and dress code, from tribes from around the world.

The group trains under Wendy Marlett a renowned teacher who herself trained with the originator of tribal dance, Carolina Nericcio. The basis of Tribal dance is a community of dancers coming together in dance.

The dance itself is unchoreographed with the dancers relying on a variety of cues, move cues or voice cues to enable the dancers to stay together. Members are made up of many nationalities including Irish, Scottish, Spanish, French and American.

We welcome the dancers back to the Space Inside and look forward to their colourful and entertaining performance.

Carol Boland

Carol Boland is a published author and poet. She spent her formative years in Dublin, with the following 25 in the UK where, as a mature student, she obtained a degree in Media Studies from Sussex University. In 2000, Carol moved to Wicklow Town and became involved with various writers’ groups, including the Wicklow Writers, Shed Poets and Wicklow Poetry Reading Group. Carol performs her poetry, with the help of a Conga drum, in various venues, and these have included the Bank of Ireland Arts Centre, Kilruddery House and the Courthouse Café (Tinahely). She now lives in Gorey, Co. Wexford.

Hedda Kaphengst

Hedda Kaphengst is from Germany and now lives in Ireland. She has a Master’s degree in acting and teaching, trained in Project Management and the Optimus Programme by FAS. She is the founder and Artistic Director of “Serendipity Theatre”, which brings The Arts into Residential Homes. Hedda is currently touring in Europe. We are delighted to have her join us at The Space Inside where she will entertain us with folk songs from Germany and France.

Peter McNiff

Peter McNiff took to journalism to make a living and to hone his craft as a writer. Along the way, he painted in oils and developed as a photographer and film maker. He freelanced as a photo journalist in London for the BBC and ITV and his career in broadcasting and journalism and photography emerged and received a television award for investigative journalism. In the eighties and nineties, Peter wrote a short fiction which was published in the Irish Press, and for which he received a Hennessy Award for New Irish Writing. His work later appeared in a number of international anthologies and was broadcast by RTE and BBC. In recent times, Peter published three books of non fiction. Stories from a Small Town and Railway Encounters concern life in Greystones from Victorian times to the present day. Last year he published Small Town Reporters. For the past four years, he has been chair at Kilmantin Arts. When not writing he concentrates on photography, digital art and acrylic painting—which is the subject of his presentation.

Anne Graham

Anne Graham is currently studying for a MA in Creative Writing in UCD, which she says has been "one of the best experiences of my life". Writers such as Kate Chopin, Truman Capote and Charlotte Bronte have made a big impact on her writing. But first and foremost, music is her main outlet of creativity. She has many influences and recent likings include Sleater-Kinney, Bat For Lashes, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Super Furry Animals, Bon Iver, Alice in Chains, ALWAYS The Beatles and even a bit of Britney!
Tonight Anne will perform a selection of her own songs with some covers. She will also read one of her short stories. Always a pleasure to see her perform.

The Nonaynevernomoores

We are delighted to welcome The Nonaynevernomoores, three dedicated musicians who are currently on a tour of Ireland.Max Bruel on accordion, is a native of Aveyron SW France and has had people dancing to the sound of his music since the age of 14. A native Ocitan speaker, he is well up on the local folklore.Leonard Zandstra on violin, is a classically trained violinist who hails from Amsterdam and is a prize winning student of the Rotterdam Conservatory of Music. He loves Irish music, especially reels.Nicky Purpora on guitar and banjo, was born in Connecticut but spent his early years in Wicklow. He is a compelling entertainer and a very talented singer/songwriter with a wide ranging repertoire. Check them out on YouTube. It’s Irish music like you’ve never heard before!

Kris Finnerty

Kris Finnerty is a singer/songwriter who lives in Bray, Co. Wicklow. His latest album, Christy is Dead, is 10 years of work comprised into one CD. The artwork in the booklet to the songs are a true showing of Kris's artistic nature and talent. His influences include Counting Crows, Band of Horses, Ben Harper and Bob Dylan. The Kilmagig Players

The Kilmagig Players are an up-and-coming drama group. They have performed various One-Act plays in different venues, including the Glenealy One-Act Festival in 2007 where they received 2 awards, and in 2008 where they received 7 awards."A Faceful of Flannel" written by Brian Langtry, is a lighthearted comedy set in the gym of a Leisure Centre. Two young women meet up at their weekly attendance at the posh gym where they mostly indulge in verbal rather than actual exercise. The arrival of a 'fit hunk' throws them a little off balance, but not for long.We welcome the Kilmagig Players back to the Space Inside with this very funny play.

Grace Wynne-Jones
Grace Wynne-Jones is the author of four highly intimate, humorous and poignant novels. She was born and brought up in Ireland, spending her early years in a big rambling rectory in the Irish countryside. Her feature articles have appeared in many magazines and national papers in Ireland and in England, and her radio play Ebb Tide was broadcast on RTE 1. Her short stories have been published in magazines in Ireland, England and Australia, and have also been broadcast on RTE and BBC Radio 4. She recently produced and presented a radio documentary about the land, legends and legacy of the Hill of Tara, which was broadcast on Newstalk. Ordinary Miracles, Wise Follies, Ready Or Not? - described as 'one of the best Irish novels this year' - and The Truth Club are available from Accent Press.
Grace will read from her work and talk about writing – the fun and frustration, the mysteries and magic of writing.

Martin Esseen
Originally from Wales, Martin Esseen has lived in Wicklow Town for the last 8 years. He has a varied amateur musical background, which includes singing at the Governor’s Ball in the Falkland islands, a guest appearance with the local band in Zanzibar and being a member of an all female choir in Wales! This will be his first public appearance in many years, and, providing his voice holds out and his 12 string guitar stays in tune, will mostly be a selection of Bob Dylan songs (and possibly a few others).

Wayne Dunne
Wayne Dunne has been playing music since he was a young boy, fronting several bands as singer/ guitarist. A very talented guitar player with a great singing voice, he has most recently fronted a band called Feedback, one of Wicklow's most popular bands. Tonight he performs solo, as he often does, singing songs from Pink Floyd and a host of other greats.

Martin Swords

‘Standing Naked’
Martin Swords is a member of Wicklow
Writers Group. In this presentation he is
‘coming out’ so to speak, talking about
writing poetry. He will read some of his
own work and that of other poets he admires.
Martin will also talk in a very personal way
about the things that made him want to write
poetry - family, friends, regrets, things not
said and things that should have been said.
Martin is published in Lifelines, New and Collected,
and Wicklow Writers Anthologies. His work can
be read on PoemHunter.com (under poet’s name),

You can also hear him read three of his poems on

Phoenix and Friends

Featuring Thomas Merrigan

Thomas Merrigan is a musician from Wicklow. He has
been playing and writing music for many years and is
know for his performances around the Wicklow area.
His music is Irish and folk based, though his repertoire
also includes some contemporary music. Over the years
Thomas’ band, Phoenix, has had different
line-ups, and many of these experienced musicians have
promised to join him on the night. The evening will throw
up some great surprises with musicians from all corners
of Wicklow joining in the craic.
The cession could go on well into the night!

Eilis Stanley

Eilis Stanley is a poet and prose writer.She has lived

abroad for several years in England and California. A

founding member of a London based Women Writers

Group,Pink Writers, in the eighties, she also wrote a

weekly column for the San Francisco Irish Herald,

and was a monthly agony aunt.

On her return to Ireland in 2000, Eilis set up a Killiney

Writers group and wrote a monthly column for an

Irish emagazine, Scarlet.

In 2006,she and a co-writer set up Kulture Klub to

do readings and encourage other local writers to give

voice and performance to their writings. Over the

years, Eilis has performed at a number of Lesbian

and Gay Pride Events.

She now lives and works in Bray. Co. Wicklow.

Christer Kavanagh

Christer is a musician and singer/songwriter

who lives in Wicklow Town. Wicklow audiences

may know him as a member of Pineto Cats, where

he plays lead guitar and sings. The group will be

recording their first album in the New Year.

Christer will play original music on the night.

Avoca

Sean Olohan from Wicklow Town and Simon Keogh

while!

They play at home and abroad as a two piece band, but

often extend to a three or four piece as The CANTONS.

Since appearing in Wicklow Sailing Club, they have

toured in Switzerland, Portugal, Germany and Austria,

as well as throughout Ireland.

Sean’s song ‘SAVING LIVES’ has been the bands

biggest success to date, topping the Irish National

Charts and Download Charts for 10 weeks. As well

as the top of the popularity charts for South East

Radio and KCLR. Simon and Sean will perform their

new single, ‘VINCENT AT CHRISTMAS’ in aid of

St. Vincent de Paul, which should launch the

festive season in style!

Novelist

Philip St.John is a prolific writer. His short stories
have been published in New Irish Writing and broadcast
on radio. He has just completed an M. Phil in Creative
Writing at Trinity College Dublin. Philip will read from
his latest novel, Crazy Baldheads, set in Jamaica in 1982.
He will also be happy to answer any questions you might
have on writing a novel.

Photographer & Artist

Jo Callanan, born in South Africa and now living
in Greystones, qualified as a Graphic Designer with
photography as a major interest.
In June this year, she hosted an open Studio Exhibition
day at Stylebawn farm studios, with a number of artists
who share and enjoy the open space of the Wicklow
foothills. Her presentation is not to be missed.

The young Irish Tenors

Tim Scanlon from Wicklow Town, Cormac O’Daly from
Tralee and Billy Kilkenny from Malahide (l to r) make up
The Young Irish Tenors.
In 2006, they embarked on two hugely successful U.S and
European tours, alongside Irish Dancing Troop, Rhythm of
the Dance. Cormac studies with Irish tenor, Emmanuel
Lawler, at the Conservatory of Music Dublin, where Billy
began his singing career under Vocal coach Robert Alderson.
Tim attended the prestigious Music department of Estonia's
Tallinn University, studying vocal training and choral
conducting with Merica Aarme and Pille Saar.

Wicklow Young Filmmakers
2008 Winners

Robert Manson was the winner of Category 1 of this relatively new competition, for his film, The Silver Bow (Producer Paul Curren). This gentle, thought-provoking film is about a street performer who meets his son in town for an hour before he goes to work. Duration: 8 mins

Dylan Haskins won Category 2 with his documentary, Roll up your sleeves: The DIY Counterculture. The film is a colourful exploration of the ‘Do-It-Yourself’ counterculture, starting from Dylan’s alternative community and moving onto his European tour with US folk punk band. Independent music features throughout the film. Duration: 27 mins.
Both winners will be available for a brief discussion on their films, after the screenings.

Jimi Cullen Singer/songwriter

If you want to go on a journey from protest songs through love songs to those that squeeze every drop of emotion out of you, then Jimi Cullen is your man.
Jimi is a solo musician from Gorey. He has been writing and performing for over three years and has built a good reputation as one of the hardest working musicians, with over 500 gigs to his credit. His debut album, When the last leaf falls, was released in 2007 and has sold over 1,000 copies, receiving good reviews in Hotpress.
Jimi’s music can best be described as mix between Folk, Grunge, Blues and Rock, mixed with a healthy dose of originality.

Shirley McClure, Poet
Shirley McClure lives in Bray. She has been published in numerous journals including The SHOp, The Stinging Fly and Revival. She won the Western Writers’ Centre/Galway Now competition and was short-listed in Listowel Writers Week competition.
Shirley was awarded a writing bursary from Wicklow County Council and is no stranger to poetry readings, as she has performed at many local events including Tinahely Courthouse Café and The Winding Stair in Dublin.
Shirley’s poem, Astrogeograph, appears on page 7 of our journal.
We look forward to hearing more great poems from this experienced poet.

May 2008 The Space Inside

The final Space Inside Live Night of the
2007/8 season had another great lineup of quality acts.
Due to construction work at the Wicklow Sailing Club, the session was held in the smaller room in the club. The intimate surroundings gave the night a party atmosphere with all the performers really enjoying the experience and asking to come back next season.

The lineup included:

Colm Lynch
Relentless gigging in the 18 months since the release
of his widely acclaimed debut album ‘A Whisper In A
Riot’, must place Colm Lynch at the forefront of
contenders for hardest working musician in Ireland.
His approach to song writing is firmly based on the
philosophy that a good song should have a strong
melody and meaningful lyrics. Colm has been
bringing this message to an ever-expanding audience
while consolidating his loyal fan base.
Along with his solo performances in pubs and clubs
across Ireland, he has supported acts as diverse as
The Blizzards, Julie Feeney, Kate Walsh, Aslan, John
Power, Foy Vance and Mundy.
His forthcoming appearances include Castlepalooza,
The Button Factory, The Dalkey Arts Festival, The
Bray Summer Fest and The Ballyknockan Festival.

Andrew Boland
Andrew is a vocalist, musician and
songwriter. He spent most of his formative
years in Wicklow Town but spent the last three
years living and studying in Dublin.
Andrew’s influences are Scott Walker, Leonard
Cohen and Morrissey.
Accompanying himself on acoustic guitar,
Andrew will perform a collection of his own
work interspersed with familiar songs from his
wide repertoire.
